vestibule

a 1st time, a blank page...

i want a web presence to be able to share with folks the artistic work i'm doing. i think of the work as an effort at a transformative politic, one that aims to take us beyond the normative...one that encourages us to be viscerally rigorous. i would like this blog to be a site where i can engage with folks around conceptual ideas, share highs and lows, exchange questions and challenges, muse about complexities, get support with resources, offer up resources and basically reveal and probe...

kwiza: to come opens april 30 and hangs through may 31, 2010 at the brecht forum, 451 west street @ ?:00--gotta find that out--anyway, it's a group show and includes myself, paintings/installations by myself; printmaking/paintings by malcolm goff, and sculpture/installation by odinga.

my first show since 1989 (or was it 1990?) is a series of 7 pieces on saartjie baartman/sara bartman/hottentot venus/venus hottentot. the series is titled subject/objects.

i'll talk more about subject/objects later, but this passage from avery gordon's ghostly matters can start the dialogue:

power can be invisible, it can be fantastic, it can be dull and routine. it can be obvious, it can reach you by the baton of the police, it can speak the language of your thoughts and desires. it can feel like remote control, it can exhilarate like liberation. it can travel through time, and it can drown you in the present. it is dense and superficial, it can cause bodily injury, and it can harm you without seeming ever to touch you. it is systematic and it is particularistic and it is often both at the same time. it causes dreams to live and dreams to die.
